Austrian Grand Prix MotoGP 2025: Shocking pole position for Bezzecchi, Márquez crashes

17 August 2025, Red Bull Ring, Spielberg

Red Bull Ring witnessed dramatic qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix MotoGP 2025. Marco Bezzecchi surprised the motorcycle world by claiming a shocking pole position with his Aprilia machine, just 0.016 seconds ahead of Alex Márquez. Championship leader Marc Márquez, who dominated all previous practice sessions, crashed in the final corner and had to settle for fourth place.

Dramatic qualifying full of twists

Francesco Bagnaia completed the front row in third position for Ducati Lenovo, while Marc Márquez with Enea Bastianini and Fermin Aldeguer occupied the second row. Italian rider Bezzecchi claimed his first pole position with the RS-GP in a dramatic battle decided by thousandths of seconds.

Surprisingly, Jorge Martin and four-time 2025 pole position holder Fabio Quartararo failed to advance to Q2. Pedro Acosta had to push his motorcycle back to the pits due to technical problems, significantly reducing his chances for a good starting position.

Márquez's Austrian curse

Red Bull Ring remains a mystery for the eight-time world champion. Marc Márquez has never won the Austrian Grand Prix during his seven previous starts, making this track one of four where the 70-time MotoGP race winner has never triumphed. Other problematic circuits include Portimao, Indonesia and Buddh.

Complications and returns

The weekend will be affected by several penalties. Alex Márquez must serve a long lap penalty on Sunday for his collision with Joan Mir during the Czech Grand Prix. MotoGP returns after the summer break with comebacks from Maverick Viñales and Franco Morbidelli following injuries from Sachsenring.
