German MotoGP: Marquez Dominates Wet Qualifying at Sachsenring
Rain became the main protagonist of qualifying for the German Grand Prix and Marc Marquez once again proved why he is the king of Sachsenring. The eight-time winner of the German Grand Prix handled the treacherous conditions with masterful precision and secured his 73rd pole position of his career, although he was nearly prevented by a surprisingly fast Johann Zarco on Honda.
Battle in the Rain: Marquez vs. Zarco
The wet qualifying brought an unexpected battle between factory Ducati and Honda.
Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo Team) claimed his 73rd pole position in his MotoGP career. Despite several dangerous moments, he dominated most of the qualifying session and responded to Zarco's challenge with a final lap that was 0.151 seconds faster.
"I had to calm myself down," admitted Márquez, who gestured to himself for calm during qualifying.
Johann Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) surprisingly advanced from Q1 as the fastest rider. On medium wet rear tires, he pushed Márquez until the final laps and got within just 0.065 seconds before the final attack. The winner of the wet French Grand Prix confirmed his excellent form in the rain.
Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia Racing) achieved his first front row start on Aprilia. Third place was secured by Morbidelli's crash in the final lap, meaning three different manufacturers in the front row - Ducati, Honda, and Aprilia.
Dramatic Moments on Wet Track
The wet track brought several dramatic moments. Maverick Viñales (Red Bull KTM Tech3) was catapulted from his bike in a highside during the Q2 warm-up lap. Jack Miller (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP) experienced an almost identical crash in the same turn 4. Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46) crashed in turn 8 during his final attack on the front row.
Several riders experienced dangerous moments in the steep descent "Waterfall." Miller managed to return on a backup bike and salvaged ninth place, while Viñales finished without a measured time and had to undergo medical checks.
