Volleyball summer begins: 18 teams fight for VNL crown with Czech premiere

Atlas Arena in Polish Łódź will become the venue for the most competitive Women's Volleyball Nations League in history from June 4 to July 27. The prestigious tournament expands for the first time from the traditional sixteen to a total of eighteen teams, with the greatest attention of Czech fans focused on our national team's debut.

The Czech Republic earned its participation through triumph in the 2024 Challenger Cup and will now attempt to compete among the world's volleyball elite. Joining them in their return to VNL is Belgium as the highest-ranked team according to the FIVB rankings, which secured the second available position.

This year's format brings fundamental changes compared to previous editions. The preliminary phase will take place in three weekly blocks between June 4-8, June 18-22, and July 9-13. Each team will play twelve matches, with the top eight advancing to the final phase in Poland. A significant novelty is also the absence of relegating teams, which enabled this historic expansion.

For Czech volleyball players, the VNL start represents a premiere at the highest international level. The coaching staff has set a realistic goal of winning at least four matches out of twelve in the preliminary phase and finishing between ninth and twelfth place. Czech players could surprise, especially if they manage to utilize the European environment during some matches.

Among the main favorites for overall victory are defending champions USA, who possess the tournament's strongest roster. However, the American team will need to handle the demanding schedule and fatigue from a long season. Traditional rival Brazil remains with their characteristic technique and creative play that can cause problems for any opponent.

Italy appears as the third hot candidate for medals. The young and hungry team has enormous potential and has significantly strengthened in recent years. European competition is completed by Turkey, which on a good day can defeat anyone with their unpredictable style.

Japan relies on fast and technical play combined with a disciplined approach. Their volleyball causes problems for all opponents and could take the team surprisingly far. Belgium, after returning to VNL, may benefit from their break and surprise opponents with fresh energy.

Poland as the host nation has automatically secured a place in the final eight, representing a significant advantage. The home environment at Atlas Arena could be crucial especially in the elimination phase, although pressure from home crowds can work both ways. Poland is expected to finish among the top six teams in the preliminary phase.

Among the most anticipated battles of the season is the traditional classic USA versus Brazil, which never disappoints in intensity and quality. European excellence will be represented by the clash between Italy and Turkey. For Czech fans, the duel with returning Belgium will be interesting, as it could show our team's readiness for the highest level.

The final phase promises dramatic moments, especially if Poland reaches medal contention in front of their home fans. The first experiences of Czech representatives among world elite will be invaluable for future development of domestic volleyball regardless of final placement.

With Czech debut, expanded format, and the most competitive field in history, volleyball fans await a truly exceptional summer full of dramatic matches and unexpected twists.
