AHL KICKS OFF: 90TH SEASON FULL OF FUTURE STARS – ABBOTSFORD DEFENDS, 32 TEAMS IN ACTION

Season Start: Friday, October 11, 2025

The American Hockey League (AHL) enters its milestone 90th season, starting this Friday with a packed schedule of 28 games during the opening weekend. All 32 teams from the USA and Canada will play at least one game, launching another season of the NHL's most important development league.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS AS DEFENDING CHAMPIONS

The Abbotsford Canucks enter the season with historic success behind them. Last season, they captured the first Calder Cup in franchise history and now have the opportunity to build on this triumph and create a dynasty.

OPENING FACEOFF: GAMES TO WATCH

The opening weekend offers several exciting matchups:

Utica Comets vs. Cleveland Monsters will open the season as the first official game of the year.

Rochester Americans vs. Toronto Marlies – The Americans celebrate their 70th anniversary season in a prestigious duel with a traditional rival.

Manitoba Moose vs. Laval Rocket – A Canadian battle where Laval will try to build on their sensational previous season that ended with a conference finals appearance.

Texas Stars vs. Grand Rapids Griffins – A rematch of the Central Division semifinal, which Texas dominated 3-0 in games.

Colorado Eagles vs. Calgary Wranglers – A clash of new coaches Mark Letestu (Colorado) and Brett Sutter (Calgary).

END OF A BROADCASTING LEGEND

Don Stevens retires after 40 years as the voice of the Rochester Americans. The final season of the iconic commentator closes a chapter in the history not only of the club but of the entire league.

HOW THE AHL WORKS

The AHL consists of 32 teams – 26 in the USA and 6 in Canada. Each NHL team has its own farm club in the AHL, ensuring a direct development path for young players.

The league office is located in Springfield, Massachusetts, and the president is Scott Howson. Players must be over 18 years old and cannot be part of a junior team. The league has a strict limit on experienced professionals: maximum 6 skaters over 25 years old with more than 260 games in the NHL, AHL, KHL, or elite European leagues. Goaltenders are exempt from this rule.

WHY WATCH THE AHL

The AHL is where the careers of future NHL stars begin. It offers a combination of young talent, historic milestones, and intense high-level hockey. In the milestone 90th season with an open battle for the Calder Cup, the league represents an ideal opportunity to see tomorrow's stars today.
