Old Trafford hosts a clash between teams with contrasting ambitions

Amorim's Challenges at United

Manchester United is experiencing a turbulent season start with two defeats from four Premier League matches and elimination from the EFL Cup by Grimsby Town. The only victory came at home against Burnley, even then requiring a last-minute Bruno Fernandes penalty for a 3-2 win.

The 0-3 defeat to Manchester City revealed structural problems in Amorim's system. Since Matchday 12 of last season when he took over the team, no Premier League team has achieved worse results than United (31 points from 31 games, -13 goal difference).

The Opta supercomputer estimates United's Champions League qualification chances at just 3.4%, while relegation probability stands at 12.3%.

Palmer's Impact at Chelsea

Cole Palmer returned from injury with immediate impact against Brentford, scoring five minutes after coming on and reaching his 50th club goal. It was his first open-play goal since January, but during his absence he led Chelsea to success in the Conference League and Club World Cup.

Palmer has collected 73 goal contributions (45 goals, 28 assists) in 100 Chelsea appearances. Since his debut in September 2023, only Mohamed Salah (97) and Erling Haaland (85) have more goal contributions among Premier League players.

United's Defensive Problems

While United create chances (second-highest expected goals 8.3 after City), their defense fails. Only Burnley (9.4), Aston Villa (7.4), and Wolves (7.2) have higher xG against than Amorim's team (6.9).

United had 94 shots in their last four home games, at least 20 in each. They last achieved such consistency between March and September 2012.

Fernandes' Milestone Appearance

Bruno Fernandes could play his 200th Premier League match, becoming the 28th United player to reach this milestone. He has 51 assists for the club - only David Beckham had more in his first 200 games (62).

Fernandes leads the league in chances created (14), with 10 from open play. He needs just one goal to reach 100 in a United shirt.

Chelsea's New Acquisitions

João Pedro after his £60 million move from Brighton has scored two goals and added three assists. Against United he has three goals in three games - he hasn't scored more frequently against any other team.

Bryan Mbeumo has six goal contributions against Chelsea in seven Premier League games (3 goals, 3 assists), all at Stamford Bridge. It's a Premier League record for goal contributions against one opponent without a home goal.

Historical Record

United are unbeaten in their last 12 home Premier League games against Chelsea (5 wins, 7 draws) since a 1-0 defeat in May 2013. Chelsea win at Old Trafford only 18% of the time - their lowest success rate against an opponent they've visited 10+ times.

Chelsea vs United matches have ended in draws 27 times - most in Premier League history. Fourteen of these draws came at Old Trafford.

Match Expectations

The Opta supercomputer favors Chelsea with a 46.8% chance of victory, while United has 28.7% and a draw 24.5%. United will rely on home advantage and need for a response to the derby defeat, Chelsea on Palmer's creativity and confidence from improved results.
