Wuhan Open 2025: Third edition of prestigious snooker tournament with records
24-30 August 2025, Wuhan, China
The snooker world returns to Wuhan for the third edition of the prestigious ranking tournament. Wuhan Open 2025 with a record prize fund of £700,000 and winner's prize of £140,000 represents the third ranking event of the 2025-26 season.
Home defender
Home hero Xiao Guodong defends his first ranking title after last year's triumph over Si Jiahui 10-7. The Chinese thus celebrated an all-national final for the second consecutive year, confirming the growing strength of local snooker.
"It is fantastic to host a tournament in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province and a vibrant city of 11 million people. There is a vast appetite for snooker among fans in China," comments Steve Dawson, WST Chairman.
Significant absences
However, the tournament will miss several stars. Ronnie O'Sullivan, world number four, withdrew for medical reasons. Neil Robertson pulled out after winning his qualifying match, while 2023 World Champion Luca Brecel was a no-show for qualification.
Their places will be taken by Chinese players with wildcards - Tang Hewen, Wang Xinbo, Zhang Hao and Zhou Jinhao. German amateur Umut Dikme replaced O'Sullivan as the highest ranked player from the Q School Order of Merit.
Tournament stars
Despite the absences, fans can look forward to a quality field. Zhao Xintong as reigning World Champion will lead Chinese hopes alongside defending champion Xiao Guodong and Ding Junhui.
Among European players, Judd Trump will attract attention as the winner of the inaugural 2023 edition, who defeated Ali Carter 10-7. The tournament is played in a straight knockout format of 128 players, with the final best of 19 frames.
Prestigious venue
The event takes place at Optics Valley Gymnasium at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the second year at this location. Qualifying matches took place in June at Leicester Arena.
Global coverage
Fans can watch the tournament on Discovery+ and HBO Max in Europe, TNT Sports in the UK, and WST Play in other territories. All tables will be broadcast live.
