Women's Rugby World Cup 2025: England hosts historic tournament with records at every step
22 August - 27 September 2025, England
The biggest women's rugby celebration in history is upon us. The jubilee 10th World Cup takes place in England with a record sixteen teams and for the first time with the official name "Women's Rugby World Cup". The final will be held at sold-out Twickenham with a capacity of 82,000 spectators.
Revolutionary tournament scale
Records are falling even before the first kick-off. The tournament's total capacity reaches 470,000 seats compared to 180,000 in New Zealand 2022. Already 375,000 tickets have been sold - three times more than the previous championship.
Eight stadiums across England host matches, with Stadium of Light in Sunderland serving as the venue for the opening ceremony and opening match. Twickenham as the home of rugby hosts the final and third-place match, while Bristol welcomes both semifinals.
Historic sixteen-team participation
For the first time in history, sixteen national teams start. Automatic qualification was earned by the four 2022 semifinalists: New Zealand, England, France and Canada.
Brazil becomes the first South American team in women's World Cup history, while South Africa secured participation with victory over Madagascar. Samoa and Spain advanced through WXV 3 tournaments.
Transformation of women's rugby
The tournament brings a paradigm shift with professionalization at a new level. Each team has its own base, totaling 30 across the country. Teams traveling from afar fly business class and have mental support including protection from social media abuse.
Five times more accredited media than the previous championship demonstrates growing interest in women's rugby, which attracts younger and more female audiences with more family visitors.
Favorites and key stories
England as hosts "Red Roses" are main favorites after losing the 2022 final to New Zealand. They benefit from massive investments in the women's program and will play the opening match against USA.
New Zealand as defending champions and historically dominant force will seek to repeat their triumph in rugby's birthplace. Preparation contrasts are evident - while England reaps investment benefits, Scotland deals with contract disputes and Wales overcomes scandals.
Coverage and viewing
BBC provides complete coverage with every England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland match live on BBC One or BBC Two. The opening ceremony will be enhanced by singer Anne-Marie's performance before England vs USA opening match.
