Tour Championship 2025: PGA Tour finale without handicap - Scheffler against all at East Lake
21-24 August 2025, East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta
The pinnacle of the PGA Tour season brings revolutionary change. Tour Championship 2025 abandons the controversial "starting strokes" format and all 30 best players of the season begin on equal footing with a record purse of $40 million.
Format revolution
After six years, the starting strokes system that gave players advantages based on FedEx Cup standings is ending. All participants now start at par and the winner is determined by the lowest total score after four rounds. This change gives all qualified golfers a fair chance.
The winner will receive a record $10 million, with earnings counting as official prize money for the first time since 2018. They also earn a five-year PGA Tour exemption and the prestigious Calamity Jane trophy.
Scheffler as clear favorite
World number one Scottie Scheffler enters the tournament as defending champion with an impressive 2025 season. Five victories including two majors and a triumph at last week's BMW Championship after a dramatic comeback make him the clear favorite at +150 odds.
"We're dealing with generational talent who competes more with history than with his PGA Tour colleagues," experts comment on Scheffler's dominance.
Strong competition
Main challengers include Rory McIlroy, three-time winner at East Lake, Viktor Hovland as 2023 champion, Patrick Cantlay and Justin Rose. Russell Henley, Tommy Fleetwood, Ludvig Aberg and Collin Morikawa are also in excellent form.
Renovated East Lake
The course underwent complete renovation before last year's tournament under Andrew Green's leadership, who restored Donald Ross's original design. This modification received enthusiastic reviews from players and experts.
