How Often Do Community Shield Winners Go on to Win the Premier League?

The Community Shield is the traditional curtain-raiser to England's top-flight football season, but is it a good indicator of who will eventually win the Premier League title?

This Year's Edition

The 2025 FA Community Shield takes place this weekend (Sunday, August 10) between defending champions Liverpool and FA Cup winners Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium.

Considered the traditional season opener, the tournament was first played in 1908, with this year's edition being the 103rd in the competition's history.

Success Statistics

Out of 33 Community Shield matches in the Premier League era (since 1992-93), only eight teams managed to win both the Community Shield and subsequently the Premier League in the same season - that's less than a quarter (24%).

None of the last five Community Shield winners have gone on to win the Premier League in the same season. Only one of the last 14 winners achieved this feat - Manchester City in the 2018-19 season.

The Paradox of the Defeated

Interestingly, ten teams that lost the Community Shield subsequently won the Premier League - more than the winners themselves.

Four of the last six Community Shield runners-up won the Premier League: Liverpool in 2019-20 and Manchester City in 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24.

Example from 2022

A perfect example is the 2022 Community Shield between Liverpool and City. Erling Haaland had a disappointing debut on English soil, including a missed chance on an empty goal. Darwin Núñez, on the other hand, won a penalty and scored on his Liverpool debut in a 3-1 victory.

The season's reality was the opposite: Haaland broke the record for most goals in a single Premier League season (36) and led City to the treble, while Núñez scored just nine league goals and Liverpool finished fifth.

Conclusion

The Community Shield is not a reliable predictor of Premier League success. Liverpool shouldn't worry too much about a potential loss to Crystal Palace, and the Eagles shouldn't abandon their title dreams if they lose either.
