Tournament Format Revolution

This year's championship brings fundamental changes that will influence the future of this prestigious competition. FIVB decided in June 2023 to expand the number of participants from the traditional 16 to 24 teams for the first time in history, providing greater opportunity for developing volleyball nations to showcase their potential on the world stage.

The new format enables a comprehensive tournament system to determine all placements from first to twenty-fourth place. Four preliminary pools of six teams each will form the foundation of the competition, with the top four teams from each pool advancing to the Round of 16. Here the paths diverge - winners continue to the quarterfinals toward medal positions, while the defeated will compete for 9th-16th place rankings.

The bottom two teams from each preliminary pool won't be left without a chance to prove their potential, as they will compete for 17th-24th place positions. The tournament's climax will be the medal matches on August 17, which will decide the new composition of the world's elite in the under-21 category.
