Basketball Championship of the Americas 2025: Premiere in Nicaragua and return to traditional period
22-31 August 2025, Managua, Nicaragua
The most prestigious basketball tournament of the American continent returns with a historic premiere. FIBA AmeriCup 2025 is held for the first time in history in Nicaragua, specifically in the capital Managua, bringing the jubilee 20th edition of the continental championship.
Return to traditional cycle
After the pandemic postponement of the previous tournament, AmeriCup returns to the traditional four-year cycle. The tournament, which was held every two years from 1993-2017, now follows FIBA's new global competition system.
Argentina as defending champions will lead the favorites after an exciting final against Brazil in the last edition. Stalwarts also include the USA with a dominant 7 gold medals, Brazil with 4 titles, and Puerto Rico with 3 titles.
Fascinating participant field
Twelve qualified teams bring interesting storylines. Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Puerto Rico maintained perfect participation records in all tournament editions since 1980.
Nicaragua debuts as host, while the Bahamas return after 30 years - their only previous participation was in 1995. Conversely, Mexico, 2013 champions, failed to qualify for the first time since 1997.
Tournament format
Twelve teams are divided into three groups of four. Each team plays once against everyone in their group, with the top two teams from each group plus the two best third-place teams advancing to the quarterfinals.
The knockout phase follows the classic single-game system from quarterfinals to the final. All games will be played at the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello sports hall in Managua.
Global context
AmeriCup 2025 follows FIBA Asia Cup and FIBA AfroBasket as part of the new global competition system. National pride is at stake and only one team will earn the honor of being crowned continental champion.
The tournament kicks off on August 22 after a technical meeting and promises ten days of intense basketball at the highest level.
