Champions League 2025/26: Historic Season with Six English Clubs and New Format
The new Champions League season is approaching and brings with it record Premier League representation, a revolutionary playing system, and a final in Budapest, Hungary. English clubs have secured a record six places in the world's most prestigious club competition thanks to their dominance in European competitions.
English Invasion of the Champions League
English football is celebrating historic success - for the first time in history, six representatives will compete in the Champions League. The qualified clubs are:
- Manchester City (Premier League champions)
- Arsenal (2nd place in Premier League)
- Liverpool (3rd place in Premier League)
- Chelsea (4th place in Premier League)
- Newcastle (5th place in Premier League)
- Tottenham (Europa League winners)
England secured the sixth spot through the so-called "European Performance Spot" - a bonus place for the league with the best results in European competitions. The Premier League will thus comprise almost one-sixth of all league phase participants.
"This reflects the dominance of English football in recent years," comments a football expert. "The Premier League is not only the richest league in the world, but now also clearly the most successful in Europe."
Revolutionary Format Continues
After successful testing in the 2024/25 season, the Champions League continues with an innovative system that replaced the traditional group stage:
New competition structure:
- 36 teams in one large league table instead of 32 teams in 8 groups
- Each team plays 8 matches against 8 different opponents (4 home, 4 away)
- Opponents will be determined by draw from different performance pots
- Top 8 teams advance directly to the Round of 16
- Teams in 9th-24th place play playoffs for the Round of 16
- Teams in 25th-36th place are eliminated without possibility of relegation to Europa League
"The new format guarantees more matches between European giants and fewer one-sided duels," explains a UEFA representative. "Each team also gets a much more relevant measure of their European competitiveness."
