Women's Basketball Takes Center Stage: EuroBasket 2025 Brings Revolutionary Format

European women's basketball will experience a historic moment from June 18-29. For the first time in history, the women's EuroBasket will be hosted by four countries simultaneously - Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, and Greece. The defending champions are Belgium, who surprised the basketball world in 2023. The tournament also offers important qualification for the 2026 World Championship.

The revolutionary format with multiple hosts represents a new era for the continental championship. Sixteen of Europe's best teams will battle not only for the prestigious title but also for valuable qualifying spots for the world championship.

Historic Debuts and Returns

This year's EuroBasket brings several exceptional moments. Portugal will make their tournament debut after 26 years of qualification efforts. Even more impressive is Switzerland's return after an incredible 69-year absence - an absolute record for waiting time.

Lithuania qualified for the first time since 2015, while Sweden returns after a two-year break. Surprisingly absent is Hungary, who finished fourth at the last championship.

Road to World Championship

The tournament has direct impact on the international scene. The EuroBasket 2025 winner advances directly to the 2026 World Championship, while the next five best teams earn spots in qualifying tournaments. Germany, as the 2026 World Championship host, already has their participation secured.

Favorites and Their Ambitions

Belgium arrives as defending champions with a complete roster led by Emma Meesseman, considered the best European player of today. "Defending a title is always harder than winning it," admits the star center. "All teams will want to raise their game against us, but we have an experienced team and believe we can succeed again."

France yearns for European gold after Olympic silver from Paris 2024. The team is led by Marine Johannes, a New York Liberty star from the WNBA. "After Olympic silver, we're hungry for European gold," says the point guard. "We have a strong team full of players from top European clubs and the WNBA."

Spain as five-time European champions (last in 2019) relies on Alba Torrens' experience with over 200 national team appearances and perfect combination play.

Czech Hopes on Home Court

Czech Republic plays in Group C in Brno with Belgium, Montenegro, and Portugal. Home court advantage could be crucial for advancing from the group.

"Playing at home is a huge advantage and also a responsibility," says Julia Reisingerová, one of Europe's best centers. "The fans will give us energy and we'll do everything not to disappoint them."

Coach Štefan Svitek brought new energy and playing style. "The home championship is a great challenge for us. We have a tough group, but with fan support I believe we'll advance," evaluates the Czech team coach.

Tournament System and Key Dates

Sixteen teams are divided into four groups of four teams each. The top three from each group advance to the Round of 16. All playoff games are single elimination.

Group A (Piraeus, Greece): Greece, France, Turkey, Switzerland Group B (Bologna, Italy): Italy, Serbia, Lithuania, Slovenia Group C (Brno, Czech Republic): Belgium, Czech Republic, Montenegro, Portugal Group D (Hamburg, Germany): Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Sweden

The knockout phase begins June 25 with the Round of 16 in all host countries. Quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals will be played in Piraeus, Greece from June 27-29.

Clash of Basketball Styles

The tournament will offer a fascinating confrontation of different basketball philosophies. France bets on athletic basketball with fast transitions, Spain on precise combination play, Belgium on team basketball with strong individuals, and Turkey on aggressive defense.

EuroBasket Women 2025 promises to be the most balanced tournament in recent years. With its historic format, strong favorites, and important qualifying consequences, it represents the pinnacle of European women's basketball.
