SK Slavia Praha - FC Baník Ostrava

Fortuna Arena, Prague

On Saturday, May 24, 2025, SK Slavia Praha will face FC Baník Ostrava in the 35th round of the Chance Liga. The match offers a clash between record-chasing Slavia and Baník, who can defeat all three traditional Czech powerhouses in a single season for the first time in history.

SK Slavia Praha lost their last Chance Liga match against Jablonec 2:3 after having a two-goal lead – the first time they lost a two-goal lead since March 2015 when they lost 3:4 against Mladá Boleslav. Slavia (87 points) still have one game to beat the record for the most points gained in a single league season. Despite their recent stumble, the "Sewn-Ones" are still heading toward a historic milestone.

FC Baník Ostrava have never beaten Sparta, Slavia, and Plzeň in a single Chance Liga season – this season they have already beaten Sparta and Plzeň twice. Baník defeated both Sparta and Slavia in the same Chance Liga season only once – in the 1998-99 season (5:0 vs. Slavia, 2:0 vs. Sparta). The Ostrava side thus has a chance for a unique treble of victories over all traditional Czech giants.

FC Baník Ostrava still have a chance to finish the season in second place – it would be their best league position after the championship season (2003-04). Baník finished third in the Czech league only three times – 1993-94, 2007-08, and 2009-10. For the first time in the Czech league, Baník will finish among the four best league clubs in two consecutive seasons. The Ostrava team thus confirms their return to the absolute elite of Czech football.

Vasil Kušej scored his third brace in this Chance Liga season on the last matchday against Jablonec and overall his fourth game with multiple goals scored since matchday 28 (1 hat-trick and 3 braces) – no player in the top 10 European competitions has more than two games with multiple goals scored in the same timeframe. Slavia's forward is thus experiencing an exceptionally productive period.

Besides coaches of Sparta, Slavia, or Plzeň, Pavel Hapal is the first coach in Czech league history to win 22 games and reach a milestone of 70 points in a single league season. Baník's coach is thus writing his name into the historical tables of Czech football.

Saturday's duel in Eden thus promises an exceptionally interesting confrontation between the home team, which is striving for a points record, and the visiting side, which can cap off a historic season with a victory over all three traditional Czech powerhouses.
