Once Caldas - GV San José

Estadio Palogrande, Manizales, Colombia

On Thursday, May 15, 2025, Colombian Once Caldas will face Bolivian GV San José in the Copa Sudamericana. The clash between teams with different playing styles promises an interesting confrontation and the possibility of extending several remarkable streaks.

Once Caldas has won its last three matches in the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, the best winning streak for the "Albos" in a single continental competition. Moreover, after winning three of their matches in the current Sudamericana, they will seek to reach four victories in a single edition of a CONMEBOL tournament for the first time since the Libertadores they conquered in 2004 (6 wins). The Colombian side thus has an opportunity to return to numbers from their most glorious era.

Colombian teams have recorded just one defeat in 30 home matches against Bolivian opponents in CONMEBOL competitions during the 21st century (20 wins, 9 draws). That loss occurred in March 2012, when Bolívar defeated Junior 1-0 in the Libertadores group stage. The home team can thus benefit from this strong regional dominance.

One hundred percent of GV San José's goals in the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage were scored in the second halves (4), the highest proportion in this phase along with Cerro Largo (3), Cruzeiro (3), Unión Española (2), and Unión de Santa Fe (2). This statistic shows the significantly better offensive performance of the Bolivian side in second halves.

Once Caldas (22.4 meters) and GV San José (24.7) have the two highest average shot distances since the beginning of the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage. Both teams thus rely on shooting from greater distances.

Only Junior Marabel (four with Palestino) has scored more goals in the second halves of his matches in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage than Dayro Moreno (three with Once Caldas), a figure he shares with Ismael Díaz (Universidad Católica). The experienced Colombian forward thus represents the main offensive force of the home team.

Thursday's duel in Manizales promises an interesting confrontation between a home team in excellent form, seeking to build on their successes from 2004, and a visiting team that is dangerous especially in second halves and relies on shots from greater distances.
