MELGAR SEEKS REVENGE AGAINST DOMINANT LANÚS IN CRUCIAL COPA SUDAMERICANA CLASH

Melgar - Lanús

Estadio Monumental UNSA, Arequipa, Peru

Peruvian side Melgar will attempt to avenge their previous defeat when they host Argentina's Lanús on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, after being comprehensively beaten 3-0 in their first meeting in Group G of the Copa Sudamericana. The home advantage at Estadio Monumental UNSA in Arequipa gives "El Dominó" hope for a successful revenge against a team that continues to set records on the South American stage.

Lanús clearly demonstrated their strength in the first encounter of this year's Copa Sudamericana, defeating Melgar by a convincing 3-0 scoreline. The Argentine club now has the opportunity to make history - if they win again, they will become only the second team to defeat the same Peruvian opponent more than once in continental tournaments. Previously, "El Granate" only managed this against Bolivian side Sport Boys Warnes in the 2017 Copa Libertadores.

The Argentine side remains unbeaten in this year's Copa Sudamericana with two wins and one draw. If they add a third victory now, they would match their club record from the 2017 Copa Libertadores, when they managed to win three times in the group stage of a continental competition in a single season.

Interestingly, Melgar is one of just two teams that have scored 100% of their goals in this year's Copa Sudamericana group stage in the first half (3 goals total). The other such team is Argentina's Defensa y Justicia (1 goal). The Arequipa club is therefore likely to bank on a fast start to the match to take the lead.

On the other hand, Lanús excels at maintaining leads. In the current edition of the Copa Sudamericana group stage, only Ecuador's Mushuc Runa (211) and Argentina's Huracán (153) have spent more minutes ahead than Lanús (147). Additionally, "El Granate" has yet to trail at any point in this year's tournament.

One of the key players for Lanús is Mateo Mendoza, who is one of only two footballers to score more than one goal from set pieces in this year's Copa Sudamericana group stage, excluding penalties (2 goals total).

However, Melgar will look to leverage their home advantage and the high altitude of Arequipa (7,661 feet above sea level) to avenge the heavy defeat from the first match and strengthen their position in the battle to advance from Group G, where they currently sit in third place with four points after three rounds.
