Sportivo Luqueño vs. Godoy Cruz

Argentine side Godoy Cruz has a historic achievement within reach in South American competition. On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the team from Mendoza will visit Paraguayan club Sportivo Luqueño in the return match of the 2025 Copa Sudamericana group stage, where they can confirm their dominance and strengthen their position for advancing to the next phase of the tournament.

Godoy Cruz already defeated Sportivo Luqueño in their first encounter of this year's CONMEBOL Sudamericana. "El Tomba," as the Argentine side is nicknamed, now has the opportunity to beat the same opponent more than once in continental tournaments for only the second time in their history. The last time they achieved this was against Bolivian side Sport Boys Warnes in the 2017 Copa Libertadores, when they won both head-to-head matches.

The Argentine team remains unbeaten in this year's Copa Sudamericana – recording two wins and one draw so far. Only once in their history has Godoy Cruz managed to win three games in a single season of a continental tournament, back in the 2017 Copa Libertadores when they recorded three victories in the group stage.

Interestingly, Sportivo Luqueño is one of just two teams that have scored 100% of their goals in this year's CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage in the first half (3 goals total). The other such team is Argentine side Defensa y Justicia (1 goal).

In the current edition of the Copa Sudamericana group stage, only Ecuadorian side Mushuc Runa (211) and Argentine club Huracán (153) have spent more minutes in a leading position than Godoy Cruz (147). "El Tomba" has yet to trail at any point in this year's tournament.

Godoy Cruz's offensive strength is also highlighted by forward Mateo Mendoza, who is one of only two players to score more than one goal from set pieces in this year's CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage, excluding penalties (2 goals total).

Fans can expect an intriguing duel, where the home side Sportivo Luqueño will rely on their strength in the early phases of the match, while Godoy Cruz will look to confirm their unbeaten record and make club history with a third victory in a single season of continental competition.
