FRIDAY CLASH IN LA LIGA: RAYO VALLECANO AIMS FOR HISTORIC RECORD IN THE CANARY ISLANDS
May 9, 2025
UD Las Palmas - Rayo Vallecano
Estadio de Gran Canaria, Las Palmas, Spain
On Friday, May 9, 2025, UD Las Palmas will face Rayo Vallecano in the 35th round of Spanish La Liga. The clash between mid-table teams offers interesting statistical trends and a potential historic achievement for the Madrid-based side.
UD Las Palmas have won their last two La Liga matches against Rayo Vallecano, the first time they have won two consecutive matches against the red-and-white team in the top flight.
On the other hand, Rayo Vallecano have won their last three La Liga away matches against UD Las Palmas, keeping a clean sheet in all three. If the Madrid side wins again on Friday without conceding a goal, they would become the first team in the entire history of the competition to win four consecutive away matches against the Canary Islands side without conceding.
Rayo Vallecano have won 57% of their away matches against UD Las Palmas in La Liga (4 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses), their joint highest away win percentage against an opponent in the top flight with at least five away matches, equal to their record against Granada CF (also 57%).
An interesting statistic is also the results of both teams in Friday La Liga matches. Rayo Vallecano have won four of their last five Friday matches in La Liga (1 loss), while Las Palmas have not lost any of their last eight Friday fixtures in the competition (3 wins, 5 draws).
UD Las Palmas have been struggling at home recently. The Canary Islands side have won just one of their last eight home La Liga games (2 draws, 5 losses) after winning three of their previous four home matches in the competition (1 loss).
Rayo Vallecano have collected 44 points after 34 games in La Liga 2024/25 (11 wins, 11 draws, 12 losses), their second-highest tally at this stage in their last eight seasons in the top Spanish division after 46 points in the 2022/23 season (12 wins, 10 draws, 12 losses).
Only Wolves (0) have won fewer penalties than Rayo Vallecano (1) in the big five European leagues this season, while only Alavés (11) have conceded more penalties in La Liga this term than Las Palmas (9).
Sandro Ramírez has scored nine goals in 29 appearances for Las Palmas in La Liga 2024/25, as many as in his previous three seasons in the competition combined (nine goals in 76 appearances across Huesca, Getafe, and Las Palmas).
If he plays in Friday's match, Álvaro García will become the third player in the history of Rayo Vallecano with the most La Liga matches (currently 170, like Roberto Trashorras and Tito). Only Cota (197) and Ángel Luis Alcázar (181) are ahead of him.
UD Las Palmas manager Diego Martínez has won only two of his six matches against Rayo Vallecano in all competitions (2 draws, 2 losses) and none of his three home games as manager (1 draw, 2 losses).
