Fluminense FC - Unión Española

Estádio Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Brazilian Fluminense will face Chilean Unión Española in the Copa Sudamericana. The clash between teams with remarkable statistical tendencies promises an interesting confrontation at the iconic Maracanã.

Fluminense has lost only one of the 13 matches they have played against Chilean teams in CONMEBOL competitions (6 wins, 6 draws, 1 loss), and holds an active streak of 11 matches without defeat (5 wins, 6 draws). The only defeat came away, in November 2005 (0-2 against Universidad Católica). The Brazilian side can thus rely on its excellent historical record.

Unión Española has lost only one of the last five matches they have played as the visiting team against Brazilian opponents in CONMEBOL competitions (1 win, 3 draws). The Chilean team won the most recent of these duels - although it was in the 2014 Libertadores (1-0 against Botafogo). Unión can thus draw confidence from their relative success in Brazil.

Fluminense is one of three teams that have not conceded goals in the first halves of their matches in the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, along with Mushuc Runa and Vitória. The "Tricolor" has also not conceded goals from their opponents in the first 15 minutes of the second half. This statistic points to the excellent defensive concentration of the Brazilian team from the start of matches.

Fluminense and Unión Española are two of the three teams that have scored 100% of their goals in the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage in open play situations, alongside Atlético Grau. Both teams thus rely on combination play and have not scored any goals from set pieces.

Ariel Uribe from Unión Española is the player who has covered the most meters with the ball in the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage (1132). The Chilean midfielder thus represents a key element in the visiting team's progressive attack.

Wednesday's duel at Maracanã Stadium promises an interesting confrontation between a home team with an excellent record against Chilean sides and defensive stability in the initial phases of the match, and a visiting team that has relatively good results in Brazil and relies on the dribbling of their key midfielder.
