On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Argentine Defensa y Justicia will face Ecuadorian Universidad Católica in the Copa Sudamericana. The clash between teams with different playing styles promises an interesting confrontation and an opportunity to extend several remarkable streaks.

Defensa y Justicia has only one defeat in six home games against Ecuadorian teams in CONMEBOL competitions (3 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss). That single defeat came in the group stage of the 2022 Sudamericana against LDU Quito (1-2). The Argentine side thus has an excellent record against Ecuadorian opponents on home soil.

After not conceding goals in their last home game in the 2025 Sudamericana (0-0 with Vitória), Defensa y Justicia will seek to play consecutive home matches without conceding for the third time in CONMEBOL competitions. This achievement has not happened for the Argentine team for seven years (two matches in the 2017 Sudamericana and another two in the 2018 Sudamericana).

Universidad Católica is one of two teams that have scored more than one goal from counterattacks in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage (two, the same number as Once Caldas). This statistic shows the danger of the Ecuadorian side in quick transitions to attack.

One hundred percent of Defensa y Justicia's goals in the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage have come from shots outside the penalty area (2/2), the highest percentage of any team. The Argentine side thus excels in long-range shooting.

Ismael Díaz is the top scorer of the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana with six goals – the highest mark ever achieved by a non-South American player in a single edition of the tournament. The Panamanian forward of Universidad Católica thus represents the main offensive threat for the visiting team.

Wednesday's duel in Florencio Varela promises an interesting confrontation between a home team that benefits from long-range shots and aims for another clean sheet, and a visiting side relying on quick counterattacks and the scoring form of their foreign marksman.
