The sixth Signature Event of the PGA Tour season kicks off on Thursday, May 8, 2025. The Truist Championship (formerly Wells Fargo Championship) brings a star-studded field to a historic course that hosts the elite of world golf for the first time in history. This no-cut tournament features 72 of the best players and represents the final major test before the PGA Championship, the season's second major, which begins next week.

While Quail Hollow prepares for the PGA Championship, the world's best golfers are heading to Philadelphia to play the Wissahickon Course at Philadelphia Cricket Club. This masterpiece by legendary designer A.W. Tillinghast from 1922, which underwent renovation in 2013, presents a classic design with modern elements. The course measures 7,119 yards (par 70), and its biggest challenge is 118 sand bunkers, the most of any course in the current PGA Tour season.

Fast bentgrass greens with dangerous slopes and a dramatic finishing stretch including a short but tricky par 3 hole measuring just 122 yards promise exciting golf theater. Strategically placed bunkers will punish every inaccuracy, favoring elite iron players and sand play specialists.

Experts expect that accurate drivers like Corey Conners, Patrick Cantlay, and Keith Mitchell could excel on this type of course. Bunker game masters Shane Lowry, Justin Thomas, and Jordan Spieth are also among the favorites to win. Putting specialists Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Denny McCarthy, and Sam Burns could shine on the fast bentgrass greens.

While public betting favors Rory McIlroy and Ludvig Åberg, analysts point to other names. Patrick Cantlay (odds 21:1) has an excellent record in the northeastern United States on bentgrass greens. Hideki Matsuyama (33:1) excels on Tillinghast courses, and his bunker play is among the best on tour, which will be crucial this week. Keegan Bradley (50:1), a northeastern native, regularly shines in this region and could surprise.

According to experts, Corey Conners could be the tournament's dark horse. At odds of 30:1, he represents an interesting betting opportunity. His statistics are impressive - he ranks in the TOP 20 in driving accuracy, strokes gained off the tee, and greens in regulation percentage. Conversely, Ludvig Åberg, who has been struggling in recent months, could disappoint. In his last four starts, he missed the cut twice, and his iron play (110th) and putting (135th) are not in optimal form.

The Truist Championship isn't just another tournament on the calendar. It's a prestigious Signature Event with enormous prize money, the premiere of a legendary course on the PGA Tour, and the last opportunity to test form before the season's second major. According to the weather forecast, rain and light winds could contribute to record-low scoring, suggesting an exciting battle for victory.
