CERRO LARGO RELIES ON HEADERS AGAINST BRAZILIAN DOMINANCE, VITÓRIA EXTENDS AWAY REVIVAL
May 14, 2025
Cerro Largo FC - EC Vitória
Estadio Ubilla, Melo, Uruguay
On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Uruguayan Cerro Largo will face Brazilian EC Vitória in the Copa Sudamericana. The match promises an interesting confrontation between teams with different playing styles and historical trends.
Vitória has lost one of their last four away matches in CONMEBOL tournaments (1 win, 2 draws), after having fallen in six of the seven previous encounters they played away from home in these competitions. The Brazilian team has thus shown a significant improvement in their away form.
Brazilian teams maintain an unbeaten streak of six consecutive matches without losing when visiting Uruguayan opponents in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, having won five of those encounters. The last home victory in this history dates back to May 2021, when Peñarol defeated Corinthians 4-0 in the group stage. Vitória can thus continue this impressive series of their compatriots.
Cerro Largo is one of two teams that scored 100% of their goals in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage with headed shots (3), the same as Melgar (4). One of those goals came precisely in their victory over Vitória away (1-0). The Uruguayan side thus strongly relies on their strength in aerial duels.
Only Hernán Galíndez (six with Huracán) has captured more crosses in the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage than Lucas Arcanjo, Vitória's goalkeeper (five). The Brazilian goalkeeper has thus demonstrated his excellent ability to read crossed balls.
Maximiliano Añasco is the only Cerro Largo player who has managed to both score and assist in the 2025 CONMEBOL Sudamericana. Moreover, he leads the team in passes for teammate shots (9) and completed crosses (7) in the current edition of the Cup. The Uruguayan forward thus represents the main offensive threat for the home team.
Wednesday's duel in the city of Melo promises an interesting confrontation between a home team that relies on its strength in heading duels, and a visiting side trying to continue improving its away form and contribute to Brazilian dominance on Uruguayan pitches.
