BUNDESLIGA'S OFFENSIVE POWERHOUSES: LEVERKUSEN HOSTS IN-FORM DORTMUND IN BATTLE OF STREAKS
May 11, 2025
Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Borussia Dortmund
BayArena, Leverkusen, Germany
On Sunday, May 11, 2025, Bayer 04 Leverkusen will face Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga. The clash between two offensively oriented teams promises an attractive spectacle at the BayArena.
After winning the reverse fixture, Bayer 04 Leverkusen could now do a league double over Borussia Dortmund for the first time since the 2006/07 season. However, their three-game wait at home for a victory against BVB in the Bundesliga is currently their longest against any top-flight side (1 draw, 2 losses).
Bayer 04 Leverkusen are unbeaten in their last seven Bundesliga games (4 wins, 3 draws) – only Union Berlin are currently enjoying a longer undefeated spell (8 games). However, B04's 2-2 draw in Freiburg was their third draw in their last four games and their 11th overall in 2024/25, a joint league high together with RB Leipzig. Since 2000, the Werkself have only ever shared the points more often in a season in 2009/10 (14 times).
Borussia Dortmund are on a six-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga (5 wins, 1 draw), winning each of their last three matches – both runs are club bests in 2024/25. BVB have collected a league-high 16 points over the last six matchdays and their current position of fifth is their highest since matchday 13.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen have picked up 13 points from losing positions in the Bundesliga this season – only FC Bayern have claimed more (14). Last time out, B04 avoided defeat after trailing by two goals for the third time this season (joint league high with RB Leipzig), something they last managed in 2015/16 (also 3 times).
Bayer 04 Leverkusen (68 goals scored) and Borussia Dortmund (64) have the second and third-best attacks in the Bundesliga in 2024/25 behind only FC Bayern München (93). BVB have the league's best chance conversion rate (21%), while B04 have the joint-best big chance conversion rate (47%, same as Gladbach).
Only FC Bayern (23.9 xGA) have a lower Expected Goals Against value than Bayer 04 Leverkusen (32.7) and Borussia Dortmund (39.6) this season. While the Werkself have the league's second-best defense (37 goals conceded), Dortmund have let in 49 goals, giving them only the ninth-best defensive record. Since 2000, BVB have only ever shipped more Bundesliga goals in a season in 2007/08 (62) and 2021/22 (52).
Borussia Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy has scored a league-high 12 goals in the second half of the season. With 19 goals overall, he is level with Leverkusen's Patrik Schick as the Bundesliga's second top goalscorer in 2024/25 behind Harry Kane (24). Guirassy is one goal away from equaling the record debut Bundesliga campaign by a BVB player (20 goals by Friedhelm Konietzka, Norbert Dickel, and Stéphane Chapuisat).
Bayer 04 Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz is the only Bundesliga player to reach double figures for both goals and assists in both 2024/25 (10 goals, 10 assists) and 2023/24 (11 goals, 11 assists). Mo Salah is the only other player to also achieve this across Europe's top five leagues. The last player to manage this feat in consecutive Bundesliga campaigns was Jadon Sancho (in 2018/19 and 2019/20 for Borussia Dortmund).
Florian Wirtz has set up 10 goals from open play this season, the most in the league. Borussia Dortmund's Pascal Groß and Julian Brandt are tied in second with Bayern's Michael Olise in this regard (8 assists from open play each).
Borussia Dortmund's Niko Kovac only has a lower points-per-game average in the Bundesliga against Bayern München (0.2) than he does versus Bayer 04 Leverkusen (0.7). Kovac has picked up just one point from six trips to Leverkusen to date. However, Werkself boss Xabi Alonso's lowest PPG average in the division is against BVB (1.3), and he's yet to beat them at home in the league (1 draw, 1 loss).
