ATLETICO NACIONAL AIMS TO RESTORE HOME DOMINANCE AGAINST OFFENSIVELY MINDED INTERNACIONAL
May 8, 2025
Atlético Nacional - Internacional
Estadio Atanasio Girardot, Medellín, Colombia
On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Colombian side Atlético Nacional will face Brazilian Internacional in the fourth round of the CONMEBOL Libertadores group stage. The clash between teams with different playing styles promises an interesting confrontation.
Internacional did not concede a goal during their first visit to Atlético Nacional in the CONMEBOL Libertadores - the match in 1993 ended in a 0-0 draw. Among teams that have visited the "Verdolaga" more than once in this tournament, none have managed to keep a clean sheet in all matches.
Atlético Nacional won their last home match in the CONMEBOL Libertadores 3-0 against Uruguayan Nacional. The last time the Colombian side won consecutive home matches in this tournament was in a series of four victories between February 2019 and April 2021.
Internacional has lost only one of their last nine away matches in the CONMEBOL Libertadores (3 wins, 5 draws, 1 loss). That defeat came in Argentina against River Plate in the round of 16 in 2023 (1-2).
An interesting aspect is the personnel policy of the Colombian team. Atlético Nacional has fielded only two foreign players in the 2025 CONMEBOL Libertadores group stage so far, which, along with Vélez and Libertad, is the lowest number among all teams. These foreign reinforcements are Uruguayan defender Camilo Cándido and Ecuadorian midfielder Billy Arce.
Internacional is an offensive powerhouse in the tournament. The Brazilian side, along with Palmeiras, has scored the most goals in the 2025 CONMEBOL Libertadores group stage (both teams with seven). Notably, they scored all their goals from attacks finished inside the penalty area.
Thursday's encounter in Colombia's Medellín thus offers a clash between a team relying on home advantage and predominantly domestic players against a Brazilian side with an excellent away record and offensive productivity. Atlético Nacional will be striving to restore their home dominance, while Internacional can confirm their ambitions to advance from the group with a positive result.
