MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB: LAZIO SEEK HISTORIC COMEBACK AGAINST NORWEGIAN SURPRISE PACKAGE
Lazio v Bodø/Glimt (aggregate score: 0-2) April 17, 2025
The Stadio Olimpico in Rome will witness Lazio's attempt at a historic European comeback as they look to overturn a two-goal deficit against Norwegian upstarts Bodø/Glimt in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final.
The Italian giants were stunned in the Arctic Circle last week, falling to a 2-0 defeat that has left them with a mountain to climb if they are to reach the semi-finals. History doesn't favor the Biancocelesti in such scenarios – Lazio have been eliminated in 12 of their previous 15 major European ties when losing the first leg and have never overturned a two-goal first leg deficit.
However, the home advantage could prove crucial for Maurizio Sarri's men. Lazio are unbeaten in their last 13 home UEFA Europa League matches (7 wins, 6 draws) since losing 2-1 to Celtic in November 2019. This formidable home record will give them confidence, despite being winless in their last three knockout stage matches at the Olimpico.
"We believe in miracles," said Lazio's coach. "Our fans will create an atmosphere that can intimidate any opponent, and we need to channel that energy from the first minute."
For Bodø/Glimt, the prospect of reaching a first-ever European semi-final is tantalizing. However, the Norwegian side's historical record in Italy provides a sobering counterpoint to their first-leg heroics. They are winless in all six of their European trips to Italy (including qualifiers), drawing one and losing five. Their most recent away game in Italy ended in a humbling 4-0 defeat to Roma in the 2021-22 Conference League quarter-final second leg.
Statistics do favor the visitors, though. Teams winning the first leg of a UEFA Europa League knockout tie by 2+ goals have progressed 94% of the time (144 out of 154 occasions). At the quarter-final stage specifically, the progression rate is 84% (16 out of 19), with only Basel (2013-14 vs Valencia), Lazio (2017-18 vs RB Salzburg), and Benfica (2018-19 vs Eintracht Frankfurt) failing to advance after establishing such an advantage.
Individual performances could prove decisive in this fascinating clash. Lazio striker Valentín Castellanos has been a force at the Stadio Olimpico this season, with direct involvement in five goals (3 goals, 2 assists) in home Europa League matches. He's averaging a goal contribution every 63 minutes on home soil in the competition.
For the visitors, captain Patrick Berg has been the engine room of their European campaign. The midfielder has made 60 tackles in the UEFA Europa League this season – a record for a player in a single campaign. He's also won possession 94 times (the most of any player this season) and made 26 interceptions, with only Josip Sutalo (30) making more in 2024-25.
Another key player for the Norwegian side is Jens Petter Hauge, whose creative influence was evident in the first leg where he created five chances from open play. The former Milan player has created 21 chances overall in the UEFA Europa League this season – the most ever by a Norwegian player in a single Europa League campaign.
The matchup represents a clash of European pedigree against emerging talent. Lazio, with their rich continental history, host a Bodø/Glimt side that has been punching above their weight in recent European campaigns. The first leg marked their first-ever meeting, and the Norwegian side will be hoping their debut trip to the Stadio Olimpico proves as fruitful as their home performance.
"We're not getting carried away," insisted Bodø/Glimt's coach. "We know Lazio's quality and what they can do at home. We'll need to be at our absolute best to progress."
With a place in the Europa League semi-finals at stake, Thursday's encounter promises tension, drama, and potentially a historic night for one of these clubs.
