MADRID DERBY: REAL SEEK TO EXTEND DOMINANCE OVER STRUGGLING GETAFE

Getafe - Real Madrid

The Coliseum Alfonso Pérez stages another chapter in Madrid's footballing saga this Wednesday as Getafe CF host Real Madrid in a derby that has historically been one-sided. Real Madrid arrive at the fixture looking to extend their impressive unbeaten run against their local rivals, while José Bordalás's Getafe desperately seek to end their drought against Los Blancos.

The statistics paint a grim picture for the hosts. Getafe have lost their last six meetings with Real Madrid in La Liga, failing to score in five of those encounters. In fact, Real Madrid stand as the opponent against whom Getafe have suffered the most defeats in their top-flight history (29 losses in 39 matches), also conceding a record 83 goals.

Carlo Ancelotti's men have established firm control over this fixture in recent years. After a shaky start to their trips to the Coliseum – losing three of their first five visits between 2005 and 2008 – Real Madrid have transformed their away record against Getafe, winning 10 and drawing 2 of their subsequent 14 visits to the Deep Blue stronghold.

"We always respect every opponent, but we know what we're capable of when we play at our best," commented Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. "Getafe will make it difficult for us, as they always do, but we're focused on maintaining our momentum."

The broader context of Madrid derbies also favors the visitors. Real Madrid remain unbeaten in their last 11 encounters against teams from the Community of Madrid (5 wins, 6 draws), their last defeat coming against Atlético Madrid in September 2023. In contrast, while Getafe did win their most recent Madrid derby against Atlético in March, it was their first victory in 21 attempts in such fixtures.

Wednesday matches have been problematic for both teams recently, albeit in different ways. Real Madrid suffered a rare midweek defeat against Athletic Bilbao in December 2024, ending an 18-game unbeaten streak on Wednesdays (15 wins, 3 draws). Getafe's Wednesday woes run deeper, with three consecutive losses on this day of the week.

Form heading into the match presents contrasting pictures. Getafe approach this fixture in poor shape, having lost their last two La Liga matches. They haven't endured three consecutive defeats since the end of last season when they lost their final five games. Real Madrid, meanwhile, have rediscovered their away form, winning their last two road games after a three-match winless streak on their travels.

One notable tactical evolution in Real Madrid's approach under Ancelotti has been an increase in attacking intensity. Since the start of 2025, Los Blancos have attempted at least 20 shots in eight of their 14 La Liga matches, a significant uptick from achieving this figure in just three of their 18 league games during 2024.

Individual narratives add spice to the contest. Getafe's Borja Mayoral faces his parent club, having scored against them twice in seven La Liga appearances – once for Levante in September 2019 and once for Getafe in September 2023. However, both goals came at the Santiago Bernabéu, with Mayoral yet to find the net in three home games against his former employers.

For Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham has proven particularly effective against Getafe, contributing to three goals (two scored, one assisted) in his three meetings with the Deep Blue. The English midfielder showed his quality in the reverse fixture in December 2024, becoming one of four opponents against whom he has both scored and assisted in the same game this season.

The fixture holds particular significance for Getafe manager José Bordalás, who faces a daunting personal challenge. The veteran coach has failed to win any of his 14 meetings with Real Madrid in La Liga (2 draws, 12 losses), making Los Blancos the only opponent among the 29 he has faced in the competition without recording a victory.

As Wednesday's derby approaches, all signs point to another difficult evening for Getafe. Yet in football, particularly in derbies, history can count for little when the first whistle blows. Bordalás and his players will be hoping to finally script a different ending to this familiar tale.
