DERBY OF WEAK DEFENSES: MBEUMO TARGETS CHELSEA, BLUES ON THE VERGE OF HISTORIC AWAY ANTI-RECORD

Brentford – Chelsea

April 6th, 2025

The West London derby between Brentford and Chelsea offers a clash between two teams struggling at their stadiums. The home "Bees" have not won at Gtech Community Stadium for seven matches in a row (2 draws, 5 losses), which represents their worst home run since nine games without a win between September and December 2006.

Chelsea is no better off. The "Blues" have lost four away league games in a row, and if they fail again this time, they would match their longest away losing streak in the last 25 years. The last time Chelsea fell five times in a row at opponents' stadiums was between October and December 2000.

The Stamford Bridge team's record away from home in all competitions is alarming. From their last ten away matches, Coach Endy's men have managed to win only twice - in Kazakhstan (3-1 against Astana) and in Denmark (2-1 against FC Copenhagen). They haven't won away on English soil for eight consecutive matches (2 draws, 6 losses). Since December 22nd, they have also earned only two points in seven away league matches, which is the worst record of all Premier League teams.

Brentford is yearning to end its long wait for a home clean sheet. The "Bees" are the only team in the entire Premier League that has not yet played a home match without conceding a goal this season. Their run without a clean sheet at their own stadium has already lasted 16 league duels, and if Chelsea were to score, it would be the longest such series in the club's history.

The mutual history speaks in favor of Chelsea, who have not lost at Brentford's ground for almost 90 years. The "Bees'" last victory over this opponent at their own stadium dates back to distant history - October 1938 and a 1-0 result. In December, Chelsea also won against Brentford 2-1 and now has a chance at their first league "double" against this opponent since the 1946-47 season.

Brentford has also been struggling in London derbies. Of the last 16 metropolitan encounters in the Premier League, they have lost 10 (3 wins, 3 draws), including the last two at home. If the "Bees" were to lose to Chelsea as well, they would record three home defeats in London derbies in a row for the first time since January 1982.

The key man for the home team could be Congolese striker Yoane Wissa, who has been involved in 13 goals in his last 14 home Premier League matches (11 scored, 2 assisted). Last season, he also scored in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Gtech Community Stadium.

Bryan Mbeumo has an even better record against Chelsea. Brentford's Cameroonian forward has been involved in six goals in his last five league duels against the "Blues" (3 scored, 3 assisted). He has recorded more goal contributions in the Premier League only against Southampton (5 goals, 3 assists).
