CAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: PYRAMIDS, AL AHLY AND TWO SOUTH AFRICANS BATTLE FOR THE FINAL!

APRIL 19-25, 2025

CAIRO, EGYPT & JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

The CAF Champions League semifinals are here! Starting this weekend, a battle between Egyptian and South African giants will ignite for a place in the final of the most prestigious club competition on the African continent.

Forget about the European Champions League - this weekend belongs to African football! Defending champions Al Ahly will challenge Mamelodi Sundowns, while semifinal newcomers Pyramids FC will face Orlando Pirates. Who will advance to the final and fight for the prestigious trophy?

The first semifinal pairing brings together two absolute giants of African club football. On one side stands Egypt's Al Ahly, the defending champions and record 11-time CAF Champions League winners. On the other side is South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns, champions from 2016, who dominate their domestic league.

The first leg is scheduled for Saturday, April 19 at 15:00 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa. The return leg will be played on Friday, April 25 in Cairo, Egypt. Both teams have already qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™, confirming their quality. Sundowns have chosen their traditional afternoon kickoff for their home match, which has brought them luck in recent seasons.

The second semifinal pairing offers a fascinating contrast between tradition and new ambitions. Orlando Pirates, champions from 1995 and an icon of South African football, will meet Pyramids FC, an ambitious Egyptian club founded only in 2008. Pyramids is the only team in the semifinals that has never won the African Champions League.

The first leg begins on Saturday, April 19 at 18:00 at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa. The return leg will be played on Friday, April 25 at Air Defense Stadium in Cairo. Pyramids FC is considered a new force in African football thanks to generous investments from its owners and has a chance to make history!

The quarterfinal matchups provided dramatic encounters. Al Ahly eliminated Sudan's Al Hilal Omdurman, while Mamelodi Sundowns surprisingly overcame Tunisia's Espérance, another Club World Cup participant. Pyramids FC survived a challenging second leg against Morocco's AS FAR, and Orlando Pirates narrowly defeated Algeria's MC Alger.

The CAF Champions League final will be played over two legs - May 24 and June 1, 2025. The winner will not only claim the prestigious trophy but also secure advancement to the FIFA Club World Cup.

This year's semifinals are completely dominated by Egyptian and South African clubs, with all return legs being played in Egypt. Pyramids FC could become the first team in history to win the African Champions League in their debut semifinal appearance.
