GALICIAN FORTRESS VS CANARY ISLAND'S YEAR-LONG FLOP: MARCOS ALONSO TRANSFORMS INTO PENALTY SPECIALIST!
RC Celta de Vigo - UD Las Palmas
March 31st, 2025
Celta Vigo has become a nightmare for Las Palmas in recent years. The Galicians have won five of their last six LaLiga encounters, while in the previous 16 matches they only managed to defeat the islanders four times. In their home fortress Balaídos, Celta is almost invincible against the Canaries - they've won 69.6% of all mutual home games (16 wins, 4 draws, 3 losses), which represents their best record against any opponent with more than 10 home matches in the history of the top flight.
The current form of both teams clearly favors the hosts. Celta hasn't lost in six consecutive league games (4 wins, 2 draws) and has won the last two. If the Galicians win for a third time, they would record their longest winning streak since May 2021, when under Eduardo Coudet they managed to win five times in a row.
Las Palmas, on the other hand, is experiencing a catastrophic 2025. They are the only team in the entire LaLiga that hasn't managed a single victory in the new calendar year (3 draws, 7 losses). The island team from the Canary Islands has also only won at Celta's ground in 3 of their last 10 visits.
An interesting aspect of the match is the fast counterattack statistics. Celta Vigo is one of only two teams in the league that hasn't scored from a break this season, despite having 15 shot attempts from these situations. On the other hand, the Galicians have conceded five times from fast counterattacks, which is the highest number in the entire competition along with Las Palmas and Girona.
The home team will rely on Marcos Alonso's newly found scoring form. The experienced defender, who previously played for Chelsea and Barcelona, has scored two goals in the last three matches, both from penalties. Before that, he had only managed to score once in his previous 49 league duels.
The main star of the visitors remains Portuguese striker Fábio Silva. The 22-year-old talent has already scored eight goals in his first 20 matches for Las Palmas, which is the best debut for a new club player since the 2017/18 season, when Jonathan Calleri netted nine goals in 37 matches.
The visiting coach Diego Martínez doesn't have a good record against Celta. From six mutual duels, he managed to win only once, right in his first encounter in September 2019, when he was still coaching Granada (2-0). Since then, he has recorded 3 draws and 2 defeats against the Galicians.
